How Does Peering Internet Works?

Peering is a mutual process where two Internet networks connect and exchange traffic. It enables them to directly hand off traffic between each other’s customers, bypassing the need to pay a third party to carry that traffic across the Internet.

The first step in peering is establishing a connection. This involves two networks agreeing to create a peering relationship, typically formalised through a peering agreement. Once the connection is established, the two networks can exchange traffic directly. This direct exchange means that data from one network’s customers can be sent to the other network’s customers without having to pass through any other networks.

The next step involves updating routing tables. The two networks update their routing tables to include each other’s routes, ensuring that data is sent along the most efficient path. Finally, networks monitor the amount of traffic being sent and received, working to keep the traffic balanced. If one network sends much more traffic than it receives, the peering relationship may need to be renegotiated.

Peering is a critical part of the Internet infrastructure. It increases the speed and reliability of data transmission by reducing the number of ‘hops’ that data must make to reach its destination. It also helps distribute the load of Internet traffic, making the Internet more scalable and robust.
